Bethel pulls away in second half, tops Augsburg 93-83.

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (1/17/07) -- Tim Madson (So., Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) scored a game-high 24 points with five assists, leading the Bethel University men's basketball team to a 93-83 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Wednesday night at the Robertson Center.

Jon Cassens (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) scored 19 points with two assists to lead Augsburg, now 8-7 overall, 5-5 in MIAC play. Zach Krumwiede (Fr., Trimont, Minn./Martin County West HS) scored 16 points with six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Dan Graf (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Darren Nelson (So., Richfield, Minn.) scored 10 points each. Graf had four rebounds and three steals, and Nelson contributed five assists.

Charles Meadowcroft (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Columbia Heights HS) had a double-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Royals, while Mike Moberg (So., Plymouth, Minn./Maple Grove HS) had 16 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots. Charles Vavra (So., Cambridge, Minn./Braham HS) and Cory Laugen (So., Monticello, Minn.) scored 10 points apiece.

Bethel used an early 11-0 run to take a 10-point lead, 15-5 with 13:37 left in the first half. Augsburg eventually cut the lead to one point, 24-23 with 8:10 left in the half, and the Royals took a three-point lead, 42-39, at halftime. Madson and Meadowcroft scored 11 points each for the Royals in the first half, while Cassens had 10 points in the stanza for the Auggies.

In the opening eight minutes of the second half, Bethel jumped out to a 16-point lead on the strength of a 22-9 run, leading 64-48 with 12:01 left. Augsburg was unable to trim the lead under six points the rest of the way.

Bethel hit 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field, including eight 3-pointers. Bethel also hit 84.0 percent (21-of-25) from the free-throw line and outrebounded Augsburg by a 39-35 margin. Augsburg hit 45.3 percent (29-of-64) from the field with nine 3-pointers, but hit 16-of-26 (61.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

Grant Hemmingsen (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored nine points with five rebounds for the Auggies, while Mitch Dice (Jr., Savage, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) had eight points and three rebounds. Femi Solaja (Jr., Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS) had a team-high eight rebounds.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/20) at 1 p.m., with an MIAC contest at Carleton. Bethel is idle on Saturday and returns to action on Monday (1/22) at 5:45 p.m., hosting Hamline.
