With the game tied 11-11 with 14:59 left in the first half, the Royals went on a 25-3 run over the next eight minutes, taking a 34-14 advantage with 6:47 left in the period. Augsburg cut the Royal lead to 14 points, 41-27, at halftime, but the Royals built the lead back up to 20 points, 53-33, with 14:28 left to play. The Royals led by as many as 45 points in the second half.
Augsburg outrebounded Bethel by a 51-46 margin, but shot just 29.6 percent (16-of-54) from the field in the game, and 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the free-throw line. Bethel shot 42.7 percent (35-of-82) from the field in the game, and 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free-throw line. Bethel forced 36 Augsburg turnovers, converting them into 36 points off of 20 steals. Bethel committed 15 turnovers and Augsburg had five steals.
"It is going to be difficult to win basketball games turning the ball over 36 times, shooting 19 percent from the field in a half, 51 percent from the free-throw line, and giving up over half of their points in the paint," said Augsburg coach Jennifer Britz. "Again, it comes down to the execution of our game plan and the simple, fundamental aspects of the game, all of which we are lacking at this current time."
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/20) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Carleton and Bethel playing at St. Catherine.
