MINNEAPOLIS (10/24/07) -- Laura Harms (Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) led all players with 17 kills, hitting .353, while adding five blocks and eight digs, as Augsburg College scored a three-game sweep of the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match on Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg needed just 69 minutes to claim the three-game victory, 30-27, 30-19, 30-25, to improve to 13-15 overall, 4-6 in MIAC play with its fourth victory in a row. The 13th win marks the most victories for Augsburg in a single season since the 1998 campaign (17-11 overall, 6-5 MIAC).
Maria Hoffman (So., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) led St. Catherine (10-16 overall, 1-9 MIAC) with 13 kills, six digs and four blocks (one solo).
A 9-1 scoring run midway through the first game gave the Auggies a 26-20 lead, en route to the first-game victory. Julie Jenkins (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had four kills and eight assists in the first game to lead the Auggies, while Hoffman had five kills and two blocks for the Wildcats.
In the second game, an 11-3 scoring run gave Augsburg a commanding 26-17 lead. Harms had nine kills, hitting .500, with three blocks in the second game for the Auggies.
Augsburg took a 20-11 lead in the third game, but St. Catherine made the final set close, cutting the lead to four points down the stretch. Harms had six kills and two blocks for the Auggies in the game, with Breann Woelfel (So., Annandale, Minn.) adding four kills. Hoffman had five kills for the Wildcats in the final set.
Woelfel had eight kills in the match for the Auggies, while Jenkins had seven kills, 23 assists, nine digs, five blocks (one solo) and one service ace. Melissa Larsen (Jr., Andover, Minn.) had eight kills and a block, while Kristina Lurken (Sr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had six kills, 11 digs and two blocks, and Amanda Rueb (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./West Lutheran HS) had three kills and three blocks.
Shanna Reed (So., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 20 assists and two service aces for the Auggies, while Haley Bower (Sr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 13 digs and Jessica Hilk (Fr., Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) had 15 digs.
For St. Catherine, Alissa Domeier (Fr., Springfield, Minn.) had eight kills and four blocks, while Megan Ahlbrecht (Fr., Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) had six kills and a block. Rebecca Zenefski (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had five kills, 10 assists, three aces, seven digs and three blocks.
Whitney Sparby (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) had 22 assists, a service ace, nine digs and three blocks for the Wildcats, while Nicole Neumann (Fr., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had 16 digs and Erika Kriechbaum (Jr., Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 13 digs.
Both teams close their seasons on Saturday (10/27), as Augsburg hosts St. Thomas at 5 p.m., while St. Catherine plays at Bethel at 3 p.m.
