Augsburg falls in MIAC opener to Carleton, 66-59.

MINNEAPOLIS (11/28/07) -- Jeremy Sutherland (SO, Eagan, Minn./St. Bernard's HS) scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, as his Carleton College men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to overtake host Augsburg College 66-59 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

Jon Cassens (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) led Augsburg (0-4 overall, 0-1 MIAC) with 18 points and three steals, while Darren Nelson * (JR, Richfield, Minn.) scored 16 points with six rebounds, and Justin Kozlowski * (SR, Wausau, Wis/Wausau Newman HS) had 10 points and five assists. Femi Solaja (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./St. Paul Harding HS) scored nine points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Zach Johnson (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) became the 18th player in Carleton (4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) history to eclipse the 1,000-point career scoring barrier, putting in 19 points (including four 3-pointers) with six assists and four steals. Johnson now has 1,009 career points. Bryan Rossett (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) scored 12 points with nine rebounds, and Carter Biewen (FY, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored nine points on three 3-pointers.

Shooting 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the first half, Augsburg took a 34-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. Cassens had nine points in the first half for the Auggies, while Nelson and Solaja scored eight points apiece.

But Carleton slowly turned the tables in the second half, outscoring Augsburg by a 39-25 margin, including a 10-2 margin in the final 4:07 of play. In addition to Sutherland's 15 second-half points, Johnson and Biewen scored nine points apiece in the second half.

Carleton hit 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from three-point range, while Augsburg hit just 26.7 percent (4-of-15). Augsburg outrebounded Carleton by a 30-29 margin, but committed 14 turnovers, which the Knights converted into 12 points. Augsburg scored nine points off of nine Carleton turnovers.

Both teams return to MIAC play with home contests on Saturday (12/1) at 3 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Gustavus and Carleton hosts Concordia-Moorhead.
