Hamline claims sweep of Augsburg.

MINNEAPOLIS (9/28/07) -- Tasha Simmons (So., Eagan, Minn.) led all players with 16 kills, along with 23 digs and a block, as the Hamline University volleyball team claimed a three-game sweep over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match on Friday night at Si Melby Hall. Game scores were 30-23, 30-28, 30-26.

Augsburg (7-10 overall, 0-4 MIAC) was paced by Laura Harms (Jr., Little Falls, Minn.), who had 14 kills (hitting .324), 11 digs and three blocks, and Breann Woelfel (So., Annandale, Minn.), who had 14 kills and five digs. Julie Jenkins (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had 14 assists, 11 digs, three blocks and four kills in the match.

Shanna Reed (So., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 28 assists, 13 digs, two service aces and a block for the Auggies, while Haley Bower (Sr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 22 digs. Kristina Lurken (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) recorded eight kills and seven digs.

Amanda Booth (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had 13 kills (hitting .367) and two blocks, and Shelby Hyllengren (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 12 kills for the Pipers, now 11-5 overall, 2-2 in MIAC play.

Hamline scored the first four points of the first game and never trailed, building a lead of as many as six points in the set. Simmons had five kills and 11 digs in the first game, while Emily Amici (Jr., Whitewater, Wis.) and Booth had four kills apiece.

In the second game, Augsburg built a 17-10 lead, but Hamline rallied with a 10-3 scoring run to tie the game at 20-20, and eventually pull away to net the victory. Booth and Hyllengren had five kills apiece in the second game for the Pipers, while Harms had six kills while hitting .455 for the Auggies.

In the third game, neither team led by more than four points in the back-and-forth set. Augsburg built a 23-19 lead, but Hamline used a 11-3 scoring run to end the match. Simmons had seven kills for the Pipers in the final game, while Booth and Hyllengren had four kills each. Woelfel had six kills for the Auggies in the third game.

Amici had eight kills for the Pipers, while Jackie Kelly (Fr., Blaine, Minn.) had 29 assists, eight digs and two blocks, and Amanda Lindeman (Fr., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had 22 assists and 11 digs. Sara Burns (Sr., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) had three service aces and 19 digs, and Heidi Larsen (Fr., Andover, Minn.) had 25 digs.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/29) at 3 p.m., hosting Macalester at Si Melby Hall. Hamline returns to action on Wednesday (10/3) at 7 p.m., with a match at St. Benedict.
