MINNEAPOLIS (9/29/07) -- Laura Harms (Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) collected 16 kills, three blocks and eight digs, leading Augsburg College in a three-game sweep of visiting Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. Game scores were 30-28, 30-25, 30-25.
Breann Woelfel (So., Annandale, Minn.) had 11 kills, six digs, three service aces and two blocks for Augsburg (8-10 overall, 1-4 MIAC), which broke a three-match losing streak with the victory over the Scots. Kristina Lurken (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) recorded 10 kills, seven digs and a block.
Macalester (2-11 overall, 0-5 MIAC) was led by Erin Cusac (So., Pine River, Minn.), who had 11 kills, 11 digs, two blocks and two service aces. Majra Mucic (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) recorded 10 kills and four service aces.
Augsburg built an 8-1 lead in the first game, but Macalester rallied to tie the game at 9-9. The Scots eventually took a 17-14 lead, but Augsburg rallied back to take a 21-18 lead, en route to the win. Harms had seven kills for the Auggies in the first game, while Woelfel had five kills.
In the second game, Macalester held a 12-10 lead, but Augsburg rallied again to lead 28-20 in the closing moments of the game. Harms and Julie Jenkins (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had four kills apiece for the Auggies in the second game.
In the final game, Augsburg built leads of 15-9 and 25-19 before Macalester rallied to cut the lead to its final margin. Harms had five kills in the third game, while Lurken had four kills. Cusac and Mucic had four kills each for the Scots in the third game.
Jenkins had eight kills, six digs and a match-high five service aces for the Auggies. Shanna Reed (So., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 39 assist and eight digs. Haley Bower (Sr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 19 digs and Jessica Hilk (Fr., Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) had 10 digs.
Marie Godwin (So., Chaska, Minn.) recorded six kills and 18 digs for the Scots, while Suzy Szumowski (Jr., Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) had seven kills and four blocks (one solo). Kari Tanaka (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) recorded 22 assists with 12 digs.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (10/3) at 7 p.m. with road matches. Augsburg plays at Concordia-Moorhead, while Macalester plays at St. Catherine.
