NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/23/08) -- Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game between Augsburg College and Carleton College at Carleton's West Gym proved to be a tale of two halves.
In the first half, Augsburg shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field, hitting five 3-pointers, while Carleton shot just 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from the field. Augsburg led by as many as 11 points and held a seven-point advantage at halftime, 35-28.
But in the second half, Carleton turned the tables, hitting 64 percent (16-of-25) from the field, including seven 3-pointers, while Augsburg hit just 31.0 percent (9-of-29) from the field, and Carleton used a 25-point turnaround -- outscoring the Auggies 46-21 -- to claim a 74-56 victory.
Zach Johnson (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) scored 20 points with 13 rebounds and six assists to lead Carleton (12-4 overall, 7-4 MIAC). Johnson scored 14 points with eight rebounds and four assists in the second half. Meanwhile, Tommy Drake (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored 18 points -- 13 in the second half, including four 3-pointers -- while Carter Biewen (FY, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored 13 points with seven rebounds, and Bryan Rosett (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) scored 10 points with eight rebounds.
Augsburg (5-11 overall, 3-8 MIAC) was led by Mitch Dice (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS), who scored 12 points (10 in the first half) with five rebounds and a steal. Justin Kozlowski * (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS) hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points with three assists, and Nate Alm (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored 10 points with a team-high six rebounds.
Jon Cassens (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) scored nine points with four assists and three rebounds for the Auggies, and David Olson (JR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) scored eight points with four rebounds and two assists.
Augsburg used a 19-7 run to take its biggest lead of the first half, 11 points at 26-15 with 6:23 left in the period. Dice had five points for the Auggies in the run. Carleton trimmed the lead to one points at 41-40 with 13:33 left, then scored the next 12 consecutive points -- with Drake scoring six points on back-to-back three-pointers -- to take a 49-41 lead with 10:19 left. Carleton led by as many as 20 points in the second half, and outrebounded Augsburg by a 36-29 margin.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/26) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Gustavus and Carleton playing at Concordia-Moorhead.
