NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/23/08) -- With two players claiming double-doubles and five players scoring in double figures, the Carleton College women's basketball team claimed an 84-49 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night at Carleton's West Gym.
Sarah Lincoln (JR, Rockford, Minn.) scored 14 points with 12 rebounds, and Sarah Kunelius (JR, Eagan, Minn.) scored 10 points with 11 rebounds, as Carleton (9-6 overall, 8-4 MIAC) led virtually the entire game, earning Knights' head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen her 200th career victory in her 11 seasons at Carleton. She is now 200-84 at Carleton, 226-110 in her 13-season coaching career.
Augsburg (5-10 overall, 3-9 MIAC) was paced by Christa Suedbeck (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), who scored 12 points with six rebounds, and Kristina Lurken * (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS), who had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.) scored eight points with five rebounds for the Auggies, while Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) and Ashley Thoeny (SO, Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins HS) scored six points each.
Carleton took advantage of a below-average shooting night by Augsburg, as the Auggies hit just 26.2 percent (17-of-65) from the field, including just 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Knights hit 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the field and 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from three-point range. The Knights also claimed a 48-38 advantage in rebounding, and claimed 26 points off of 20 Augsburg turnovers. The Auggies scored only six points off of 18 Carleton miscues, and was outscored in the "paint" by a 40-18 margin.
The Knights jumjped out to a 25-8 advantage in the first nine minutes of play, building the lead to 43-20 at halftime and by as many as 37 points in the second half. Anna Biewen (JR, Edina, Minn.) and Ally Weaver (FY, Iowa City, Iowa/West HS) scored 12 points apiece for the Knights, while Hannah Oken-Berg (JR, Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) scored 11 points.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/26) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Gustavus and Carleton playing at Concordia-Moorhead.
