Hamline stops Augsburg in 4 sets.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/3/08) -- The Augsburg College volleyball team dropped a four-set Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Hamline University at Hutton Arena on Friday night. With the loss, the Auggies fell to 10-9 overall on the season (1-4 MIAC), while the Pipers moved to 11-5 overall (2-2 MIAC). Game scores were 15-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 in favor of Hamline.

Augsburg came out strong in the first set, matching Hamline point for point to a 5-5 tie. The Auggies were able to put together a series of runs in the second half of the set as they outscored Hamline 15-7 and sealed the 25-15 victory. Augsburg hit .375 for the set and was sparked by Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), who recorded eight kills.

In the second set, Hamline jumped out to a 10-5 lead, forcing the Auggies to take a time out. Both teams were very effective offensively throughout the reminder of the set, Augsburg hitting .414 and Hamline hitting .382. The early lead proved to be the difference in the match, as Hamline went on to win 25-19.

Both teams were very evenly matched in the third set, as there were five ties during the course of the set. Three kills by Barbara Simmons (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) tied things up at 12-12. Augsburg used great blocking from Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.), Simmons and Christensen down the stretch to bring the score within one at 24-23, but were not able close out the set as Hamline went on to pick up the 25-23 win.

The fourth set found Hamline with an early 10-6 lead. The Auggies made a run late in the set triggered by kills from Christensen, Jenkins, Breann Woelfel (JR, Annandale, Minn.) and Amanda Rueb (SR, Plymouth, Minn./West Lutheran HS) but were not able to close the gap as Hamline went on to win 25-20.

For the match, Augsburg was led by Christensen with 16 kills and Woelfel and Jenkins, who both had 13. Woelfel also posted 10 digs in the match for the kill-dig double-double. Setter Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) recorded 42 assists while libero Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led all players with 18 digs.

Hamline (11-5 overall, 2-2 MIAC) was led by Amanda Booth and Anita Rojas, who recorded 14 and 13 kills respectively. Also having a good night for the Pipers was Jackie Kelly, who led the team with 15 digs.

The Augsburg volleyball team will next be in action on Tuesday (10/7), hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Si Melby Hall at 7 p.m.
