GAME BOXSCORE | AUGSBURG SEASON STATISTICS

MINNEAPOLIS (10/4/08) -- Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg College in the 47th minute, and goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) collected two saves in goal for her eighth shutout of the season and 34th of her career, as Augsburg College scored a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg (7-1-3 overall, 3-0-3 MIAC) extended its unbeaten streak to seven straight games (4-0-3) with the victory, and goalkeeper DeGroot moved into a tie for second place on the school's career goalkeeper victory list. She is now tied with Beth Petrik (1995-98) with 34 career victories; the school record is 35, set by Laura Hoffman (2000-03).

Medd scored her team-high fourth goal of the season just 1:16 into the second half, taking a service from Whitney Holman (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) that bounced past a defender. Medd then sprinted to the penalty box and put a shot across the crease for the lone goal of the game.

"Katie Medd has been playing very well lately," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Obviously, her goal was the difference tonight. We talked about getting behind their defense and Whitney delivered a great ball from the back that allowed Katie to get in."

Augsburg dominated the run of play, outshooting St. Mary's by a 13-1 margin in the first half, en route to a 22-5 advantage in the game. Defenders Kristi Castelic (JR, De Pere, Wis./West DePere HS), Felicia Faison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Gaby Hamerlinck (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Holman joined DeGroot in gaining the team's seventh shutout of the season.

"Overall we played well today, creating some good attacks and possessing the ball well in stretches," Navarre said. "Nothing is easy in the MIAC, so we are excited to get another win and shutout."

Medd, Hamerlick and Kelsey Watsabaugh (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) had three shots apiece for the Auggies, while Stephanie Marnocha (JR, Appleton, Wis./Appleton North HS), Tania Trowbridge (SO, Shakopee, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Amanda Rahman (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had shots for St. Mary's. Mariana Sanchez (JR, Puebla, Mexico) collected six saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Tuesday (10/7) at 4 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Gustavus and St. Mary's playing at St. Thomas.

"Gustavus is very talented team and always tough to beat at home," Navarre said. "It will be a tough test for our team on Tuesday."
