ST. PETER, Minn. (10/7/08) -- Courtney Gamrath (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) scored goals in an eight-minute span early in the second half, rallying Augsburg College from a 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 victory over host Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon at the Gustie Soccer Field.
Augsburg's Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) moved into a tie for the school's all-time goalkeeper victory record with her 35th career win (35-16-15 record), collecting four saves in goal. She tied Laura Hoffman (2000-03), who was 35-23-5 in her career, while passing Beth Petrik (1995-98), who had 34 wins in her career. DeGroot also has a school-record 34 career shutouts.
Augsburg (8-1-3 overall, 4-0-3 MIAC) was outshot by a 6-4 margin in the second half, but two of the Auggies' four shots went in the net. Gamrath notched her first collegiate goal in the 51st minute, collecting a pass from Lisa Wenige (FY, Eagan, Minn./School of Environmental Studies HS) and putting a bouncing shot to the left corner. In the 59th minute, Medd gained her team-leading fifth goal of the season, taking a pass from Lacey Hoover (SO, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) off a throw-in and putting a shot to the upper left corner.
Callie Christensen scored the lone goal for Gustavus (4-6-2 overall, 2-3-1 MIAC). Ashley Ohlson collected four saves in goal for the Gusties.
"This was an impressive win," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "We showed a lot of character and resolve to come from behind in the second half after giving up a tough goal in the first half."
Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 10-7 margin. Medd and Kelsey Watsabaugh (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) had two shots each for the Auggies, while Christy Tupy had three shots for the Gusties and Becca Hagen had two shots.
Augsburg has a nonconference game on Friday (10/10) at 7 p.m. against Loras (Iowa) at Edor Nelson Field. Gustavus returns to action on Saturday (10/11) at 11 a.m., hosting Bethel.
"As I told the players, I was proud to be their coach today," Navarre said. "Now we have to get ready to host Loras, one of the best teams in the region, on Friday night."
