Bethel ends Augsburg's season with 26-0 decision at Metrodome

MINNEAPOLIS (11/13/08) -- Bethel University quarterback Josh Aakre (FY, Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS) rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns, leading his Royals to a 26-0 victory over Augsburg College in the final Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest for both teams on Thursday evening at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Logan Flannery (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) rushed for 119 yards on 28 carries with a touchdown, going over the 1,000-yard mark for the season for the Royals (5-5 overall, 4-4 MIAC). Flannery finished his sophomore campaign with 1,016 yards on 209 carries.

Bethel's defense limited Augsburg (5-5 overall, 3-5 MIAC) quarterback #Jordan Berg *# (SR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) to just 111 yards on 14-of-28 passing, while sacking him four times and forcing three interceptions. Nate Gutshall (JR, Urbandale, Iowa) had two interceptions and Jared Lyle (JR, Elgin, Ill.) had two sacks on the evening for the Royals.

Despite the 111-yard performance, Berg ended his Augsburg career as the top passing quarterback in school history. In three seasons at Augsburg, Berg finished with 8,777 passing yards (292.6 yards per-game) on 796-of-1,350 pasing with 74 touchdowns -- all school records. Berg also holds the MIAC's career passing yardage record (conference games-only) with 7,414 yards in 24 league games.

Berg also set a single-season school record with 297 completions this season, breaking his old record of 291 set last year. His 499 passing attempts, 3,226 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns are all second-most in a single season in school history, behind his 2007 totals of 502 passing attmpts, 3,444 yards and 34 touchdowns.

#Jason Potts# (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led the Auggies with 51 rushing yards on 10 carries, while #Muneer Al-Hameed# (SO, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught five passes for 42 yards.

Wide receiver #Royce Winford *# (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS), who caught five passes for 29 yards, finished his career tied with Scott Hvistendahl (1995-98) for the school's career records for overall touchdowns (41) and receiving touchdowns (40), while tying his own single-season record with 16 receiving touchdowns. With 93 catches for 1,139 yards this season, Winford finished his career with 247 receptions for 3,282 yards, second to Hvistendahl (285 receptions, 4,696 yards) in school history in those careerrecord-lists.

Dusty Wahl (JR, Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored a first-quarter touchdown for the Royals, and Aakre scored twice on one-yard runs in the second quarter. Flannery finished the scoring with a six-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Augsburg's #Peter Joppru# (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) led all players with 15 tackles (two solo), while #Adam Ebert# (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and #Donovan Bates# (SR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) had 10 tackles apiece. For Bethel, Cory Svihla (SO, Foley, Minn.), Billy Morgan (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) and Dan Curtis (JR, Minnetonka, Minn.) had five tackles each.
