Men's Basketball 11/18/08 -- Augsburg 97, Crown 46
ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (11/18/08) -- In its season-opener, the Augsburg College men's basketball team (1-0 overall) defeated Crown College (0-1 overall) 97-46 on Tuesday night in nonconference action.
Augsburg's David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) led all players with 14 points on a 5-for-8 shooting performance. Olson also had a block and a steal in only 17 minutes of action. As a team, the Auggies had five players score in double figures and a total of 12 different players score overall.
Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Ben Antoniewicz (SO, Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) with 13 and Jon Cassens (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) with 12. Cassens also led the team with seven assists. Matt Quammen (SO, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) and Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (FY, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) chipped in 11 and 12 points, respectively.
The Auggies scored the first bucket of the night on a jumper by Cassens and would never look back. After only six minutes of play, Augsburg had already built a double-digit lead that grew as large as 28 points in the first half, and the 51-point margin of victory was its largest lead. The Auggies forced Crown to turnover the ball 22 times and only allowed the Storm six free-throw attempts in comparison to 24 free-throw attempts for the Auggies. Every player in the Augsburg lineup made a contribution as the Auggies registered their first victory of the season.
Augsburg will next be in action on Friday (11/21) at 6 p.m., facing Crown in a rematch hosted at Si Melby Hall.
