Augsburg finishes 2-2 at Wartburg (Iowa) Invitational.

WAVERLY, Iowa (9/12-13/08) -- The Augsburg College volleyball team traveled to the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center for the Wartburg College Invitational over the weekend, where it finished with a 2-2 record. Augsburg's Laura Harms (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

On Friday, Augsburg opened with a three-set victory over Coe College (27-25, 25-22, 25-21). The Auggies then dropped a five-set match to eventual tournament champion Nebraska Wesleyan (25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 7-15). On Saturday morning, the Auggies picked up a four-set victory over Simpson (12-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-20) and finished the tournament with a close loss to host Wartburg (18-25, 23-25, 25-22, 26-28).

In the match against Coe, the Auggies were led by Harms, who tallied 10 kills, eight digs and two solo blocks. Also playing big roles in the match against Coe were Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS). Tanaka recorded 30 digs, while Reed recorded 30 assists and nine digs.

In a back-and-forth match against Nebraska Wesleyan, the Auggies' defense was solid with five different players recording 10 or more digs. Tanaka led the way with 38 while Jessica Hilk (SO, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) contributed 15 and Reed had 13. Recording 10 digs in the match was Harms and #Julie Jenkins# (SR, Edina, Minn.). Harms also led the way offensively, posting a career high 29 kills in the match. Reed tallied 50 assists for the Auggies in the loss.

After dropping the first set against Simpson, the Auggies rallied to take the next three sets and claim the victory. A balanced and powerful hitting attack proved to be the difference for the Auggies. As a team, Augsburg hit .390, its most productive offensive attack yet this season. The Auggies had five different players record seven or more kills -- leading the way was Jenkins with 17. She was followed by Harms with 12, Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) with 10, and Breann Woelfel (JR, Annandale, Minn.) and Barbara Simmons (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who each had seven.

In the final match of the tournament, Augsburg was led by the duo of Jenkins and Harms, who recorded 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Defensively, the Auggies were anchored by Hilk who recorded 21 digs in the match. From her setter position, Reed led the Auggies with 41 assists.

The Augsburg volleyball team is next in action on Wednesday (9/17) at 7 p.m. when it travels to St. Peter, Minn., to face Gustavus Adolphus College.
