MINNEAPOLIS (9/20/08) -- Augsburg College goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) continued to improve upon her school record for career shutouts, as she claimed the 32nd shutout of her career and sixth of this season with a six-save effort in Augsburg's 0-0 tie in two overtimes against the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

St. Thomas goalkeeper Allie Byron (FY, Woodbury, Minn.) collected seven saves in goal for her first collegiate shutout, as the two MIAC women's soccer contending teams played a defensive battle.

Augsburg is now 5-1-2 overall, 1-0-2 in MIAC play, while St. Thomas is 5-0-3 overall, 2-0-2 in MIAC play. It's the second scoreless tie for Augsburg this season, after playing to a scoreless draw with Concordia-Moorhead on Sept. 10.

"This was a difficult game," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "It seemed like neither team was able to find a rhythm to the game. I'm pleased that we shut down a very athletic and dangerous team. However, we did not create many opportunities for ourselves today."

St. Thomas dominated possession during regulation time and outshot Augsburg by a 26-9 margin -- a 10-3 advantage in the first half and a 12-3 advantage in the second half. In the overtime, possession was much more even between the two teams, as St. Thomas had four shots to Augsburg's three in the 20 minutes of overtime.

Augsburg had its best chance to win with seven minutes left in the second overtime, as a Lacey Hoover (SO, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) service from the right side nearly found teammate Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) in front of the goal, but the ball eluded both Medd and the St. Thomas defenders and rolled out of bounds.

St. Thomas also had a solid shot to win late in the game, as a Kirsten Moran (JR, Southlake, Texas/Carroll HS) shot was saved by DeGroot with 2:41 left, and a shot by Lexie Fisher (SO, Buffalo, Minn./Rockford HS) with 56 seconds left sailed wide.

Kelsey Watsabaugh (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS), Courtney Gamrath (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Lisa Weniger (SO, Eagan, Minn./School of Environmental Studies HS) had two shots each for the Auggies. Abie Krause (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) had six shots for St. Thomas, while Stephanie Paasch (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had four shots.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (9/24) at 4 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Olaf and St. Thomas hosting Carleton.

"Our conference is so tight; of the teams that have played four games, no one has more than two wins. I guess we just have to stay committed to our mission of contending for the title and resolve to continue to get better," Navarre said. "We are very banged up. Hopefully we can recover quickly for our away game against a much improved St. Olaf team on Wednesday."
