NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/24/08) -- The Augsburg College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Carleton College on Wednesday night, falling 25-19, 25-15, 25-19 at Carleton's West Gym. With the loss, Augsburg moves to 8-7 overall, 0-2 in MIAC play, while Carleton moves to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The first set of the evening began with both teams trading points to a 3-2 Carleton lead. The Knights rattled off the next seven points before a
Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) kill gave the Auggies back the serve. The Knights went on another run pushing their lead to 21-10. Blocking by the Auggie front line sparked a 9-2 Auggie run to close the gap to 23-18, but the Knights proved to be too much and closed out the set 25-19.
The Auggies came out strong in the second set and pushed the score to a 6-6 tie on two kills by
Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.) and one kill each from
Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Barbara Simmons (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS). Carleton's offense could not be contained as it hit .344 for the set and claim the 25-15 victory over Augsburg.
The Knights jumped out to an early 15-8 lead in the third set before the Auggies were able to make a run. Two kills each by Jenkins and
Dani Boner (JR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) forced Carleton to take a time out as the Auggies closed the gap to 15-12. Both teams traded points back and forth for the remainder of the game as Knights pulled away to claim the 25-19 win.
For the match, the Auggies were led by Jenkins who recorded 10 kills and seven digs. Setter
Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) posted 25 assists while Tanaka led the defense with 14 digs. The Knights were led offensively by
Kelly Lovett, who recorded 11 kills in the match. Defensively Carleton was led by the duo of
Megan La Chapelle and
Laura Barsness, who each posted 14 digs on the night.
The Auggies next action will be their MIAC home opener on Friday (9/26) against the College of St. Benedict at 7 p.m. in Si Melby Hall.
