NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/24/08) -- Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg College in the 11th minute, and goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) collected five saves in goal for the tie, as the Auggies played to a 1-1 tie against St. Olaf College in two overtimes in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at St. Olaf's Rolf Mellby Field.
Lacey Hoover (SO, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) claimed an assist on Medd's goal, as the senior forward put a shot under St. Olaf goalkeeper Elizabeth Huggins in the 11th minute to give Augsburg (5-1-3 overall, 1-0-3 MIAC) the early lead.
However, St. Olaf (4-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 MIAC) tied the game 12 minutes later, as Deanne Schmidt scored on a deep angle shot from the left side from K.C. Beed.
St. Olaf dominated the run of play in the first half, outshooting Augsburg by a 7-4 margin. However, Augsburg and St. Olaf played a much more even game in the second half, with both teams having solid opportunities to score. Augsburg controlled possession in the two overtime periods, despite being outshot by a 3-2 margin in the 20 minutes of extra time. St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 16-11 margin in the game, with Huggins claiming two saves in goal.
"Both teams played hard today and created dangerous opportunities. Admittedly, either team could have won," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "We are not overly thrilled with having three ties already, but we recognize the overall strength and parity in the league."
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/27) at 1 p.m., with a conference game at St. Catherine. St. Olaf plays at St. Benedict on Saturday at 1 p.m.
"I expect us to play well and with a purpose on Saturday versus a strong St. Catherine team," Navarre said.
