Augsburg opens home season with sweep of Crown.

MINNEAPOLIS (9/3/08) – Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.) led Augsburg College with 12 kills, hitting .348, while adding four digs and three blocks (one solo) in a three-set nonconference volleyball victory over Crown College on Wednesday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall. Scores were 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.

Also playing a large role in the Augsburg (4-1 overall) victory was setter Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn/Holy Angels HS). Reed led the team with 31 assists while also contributing six digs and four service aces.

Leading the Auggie defense was Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) with 14 digs. Also making a large contribution on the defensive side of the ball was the duo of Katie Christensen (SO, Noth Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and #Dani Boner# (JR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS), who recorded nine digs apiece on the night.

For Crown (0-5 overall), Naomi Anderson (FY, Pine River, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS) had six kills and five blocks (two solo), while Laura Plowman (SO, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) had six kills. Annette Case (SR, Max, Neb./Dundy County HS) had 13 assists and 13 digs.

In the first set, the Auggies got off to a quick start with a 8-1 lead, before trading points back and forth to a score of 18-13. After holding off a late Crown run, the Auggies played a decisive final three points to close out the game with a 25-18 score. Barbara Simmons (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had three kills in four attempts, hitting .750, in the first set.

Set two saw the Auggies again off to a quick lead, this time 11-5. The middle of the match found both teams making small runs but neither was able to pull away. Two kills by Jenkins sparked the Auggies to score seven of the final eight points of the set and coast to the 25-13 victory. Jenkins had six kills, hitting .400, in the second set, while Reed had 11 assists.

As with the first two sets of the night, Augsburg got off to a quick lead at 6-0. The Auggies continued to push the score to 20-11 before allowing a five-point Crown run late in the match. The Auggies capitalized on two Crown errors and two kills by Jenkins to close out a successful first home match with a final score of 25-16. Jenkins had four kills in the set, while Breann Woelfel (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) had three kills.

The Auggies return to action Friday (9/5) as they host the first day of the two-day Augsburg Invitational, kicking off at 2 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
