SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8:
MINNEAPOLIS (9/6/08) -- Day two of volleyball action at the Augsburg College Volleyball Invitational proved to be even more exciting than day one. The University of St. Thomas claimed a thrilling five-set, come-from-behind victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-11) in the championship match. The third-place match was equally exciting with a back-and-forth, five-set victory for the College of St. Benedict over Augsburg College (23-25, 27-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-11).

Day two at the Augsburg Invitational began with two three-set matches in first round of action. Augsburg defeated Macalester College (25-21, 33-31, 25-18) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire beat Schreiner University (Texas) (25-23, 25-14, 25-16). The Auggies were led by Laura Harms (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) who recorded 13 kills (.435) and Dani Tanaka (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) who posted 21 digs. Wisconsin-Eau Claire was led by Katie Fox (SR, Chippewa Falls, Wis.) with 10 kills (.412) and Emily Haese (SR, Mishicot, Wis.) with 27 assists.

In second-round action, St. Thomas claimed a three-set victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior (25-11, 26-24, 25-16) while St. Benedict defeated Northwestern College-Roseville in a hard-fought, five-set match (19-25, 25-10, 16-25, 25-23, 15-10). The Tommies were led by Katie McCaffrey (SR, Fort Collins, Colo.) who claimed 12 kills (.522) and Emily Forster (SO, Minnetonka, Minn.) who posted 34 assists and four kills (.800). St. Benedict was led by Beth Hanson (JR, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Acad.) with 33 assists and 11 kills.

In the seventh-place match, Wisconsin-Superior defeated Schreiner (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25, 15-13). Superior was led by the duo of Chelsie Christofferson (JR, Buffalo Pt., Manitoba) and Wendy Bowman (FY, Wrenshall, Minn.) who claimed 15 and 10 kills respectively. Also leading the Yellowjackets was Kayla Finck (SO, Bertha, Minn.) who posted 39 assists. Schreiner was led by Xandria White (SR, San Antonio, Texas) who recorded 19 kills in the match.

Northwestern defeated Macalester in a three-set, fifth-place match (25-21, 25-19, 25-18). Northwestern was led by Steph Koth (JR, Hibbing, Minn.) with 12 kills and Danielle Rhodes (SO, Iowa City, Iowa) who claimed 19 digs. Macalester was led by Danielle Dweck (FY, Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore HS) with 21 assists and Marie Goodwin (JR, Chaska, Minn.) who recorded six kills and 13 digs.

In the third-place match, St. Benedict defeated Augsburg in a five-set thriller. The Blazers were led by Hanson, who recorded 50 assists, nine kills and seven digs. Emma Jaynes also had a big night for St. Benedict, claiming 17 kills (.342) and 22 digs. The Auggies were led by Dani Boner (JR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) who posted 18 kills and four digs. Also playing key roles in the match for the Auggies were Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angles HS) with 43 assists and Tanaka with 31 digs.

St. Thomas claimed the exciting come-from-behind victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire to capture the championship at the 27th annual Augsburg Invitational. The Tommies were led by McCaffrey, who posted 20 kills (.543) and four digs in the match. Also having big nights for St. Thomas were Katie Kremer (SR, Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), who recorded 41 digs, and Foster, who posted 43 assists. Wisconsin-Eau Claire was led by Haese with 45 assists and Fox with 16 kills.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7:
MINNEAPOLIS (9/5/08) -- An exciting first day of volleyball action at the Augsburg College Invitational came to a dramatic close on Friday night at Si Melby Hall, with the University of St. Thomas claiming an intense five set victory over the College of St. Benedict (25-18, 12-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-11) in the final match of the evening.

At the close of day one, Pool A is being led by Macalester College, which claimed a five-set victory over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (11-25, 25-22, 10-25, 25-23, 15-11) and a three set win over Schreiner University (Texas) (25-16, 25-16, 25-20). Both Augsburg College and Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished the first day of pool play with a 1-1 record. Augsburg claimed a three set victory over Schreiner (25-16, 25-15, 27-25) to begin the tournament and then lost to Wisconsin-Eau Claire (17-25, 9-25, 22-25).

St. Thomas claimed a 2-0 record on day one of the Augsburg Invitational and are currently the front-runners in Pool B. The Tommies began the tournament with a three-set victory over Northwestern College-Roseville (25-14, 25-10, 25-19) before defeating St. Benedict in what turned out to be the highlight match of the evening. St. Benedict and Northwestern both finished the first day of tournament action with a 1-1 record. St. Benedict claimed an easy three-set victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior (25-12, 25-15, 25-8) before dropping the heartbreaker to St. Thomas. Northwestern bounced back from their first round loss to the Tommies and defeated Wisconsin-Superior (25-17, 25-20, 25-11).

St. Benedict led all teams in hitting percentage (.341) on day one. Individually, the Blazers were led by Emma Jaynes (JR, East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) who hit .429 with 23 kills. Schreiner led day one of the tournament in kills, averaging 12.33 kps. Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Emily Zupon (SO, Antigo, Wis.) led all players with 35 kills (4.38 kps). Wisconsin-Eau Claire led all teams in assists at the conclusion of day one. The Blugolds recorded 10.63 assists per set and were led by setter Emily Haese (SR, Mishicot, Wis.), who recorded 9.14 assists per game.

Defensively, St. Thomas led all teams in digs, recording 16.88 digs per set. Tommie defensive specialist Katie Kremer (SR, Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) led players with 46 digs while Northwestern's Kelsey Korporal (SO, Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg HS) led all players in digs per-set average (6.33 dps). Augsburg led all teams in blocking, recording 2.83 blocks per set. Individually, Katie Fox (SR, Chipewa Falls, Wis.) from Wisconsin-Eau Claire led all players with 12 blocks (one solo).

The second day of tournament action begins 9 a.m. Saturday morning (9/6) at Si Melby Hall.
