Augsburg claims two shutout wins at NWCA Division III National Duals -- 54-0 over Buena Vista (Iowa) and 54-0 over Johnson and Wales (R.I.).

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (1/10/09) -- Winning all 20 bouts, including 19 by bonus points, the Augsburg College wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals on Saturday afternoon at the University of Northern Iowa's UNI Dome.

Augsburg, ranked No. 2 in the latest Division III national poll, opened its tournament with a 54-0 victory over Buena Vista (Iowa), then blanked No. 21-ranked Johnson and Wales (R.I.) 54-0 in the quarterfinals. Augsburg will face No. 3-ranked Delaware Valley (Pa.) on Sunday (1/11) at 11 a.m. in the semifinals, with top-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) facing No. 4-ranked Coe (Iowa) in the other semifinal. The winners will meet at 3 p.m. for the National Duals championship, with the losers battling for third place at 3 p.m.

In the victory over Buena Vista, Augsburg claimed all 10 bout wins by bonus points -- six pins, three technical falls and a major decision. Augsburg received three forfeit victories in the triumph over Johnson and Wales, and also had four pins, a technical fall and a major decision.

No. 3-ranked heavyweight Andy Witzel (JR, Fulda, Minn.) claimed two first-period pins -- 52 seconds and 2:41 -- on Saturday to improve to 21-1 on the season with nine pins. Tony Valek (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) scored two pins at 141, as did Brad Baus (FY, Mukwonago, Wis.) at 184 and 197.

Top-ranked wrestlers Seth Flodeen (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn.), at 125, and Travis Lang (SR, Bismarck, N.D.), at 133, both had a pin and forfeit win on the day. Lang, now 22-0 on the season, has recorded 20 wins by bonus points -- 15 pins, two technical falls, two major decisions and a forfeit. Flodeen is now 8-1 on the year.

No. 2-ranked Willy Holst (SR, Prescott, Wis.) improved to 10-0 with two wins on Saturday, with a 42-second pin in his opening match and a 19-4, technical-fall win in the second match. Jason Adams (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), ranked No. 5 at 157, improved to 22-2 with two victories, a 15-0 technical fall and a 9-1 major decision. Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS), ranked No. 2 at 197, claimed a 1:28 pin in his only match of the day.

Two other Minnesota programs are also in the Division III National Duals. No. 22-ranked Concordia-Moorhead will wrestle for fifth place against No. 11 Cornell (Iowa) on Sunday at 1 p.m., after going 3-1 in its four matches on the day, including a 22-14 triumph over in-state rival No. 9-ranked St. John's in the consolation third round. The Johnnies won their opening match 22-10 over No. 24 Heidelberg (Ohio), but lost 41-4 to Delaware Valley and 22-14 to Concordia-Moorhead.
