Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) posted her eighth double-double of the season, with 50 assists and 20 digs, as she led the Augsburg College volleyball team to a five-set thriller over No. 18-ranked Concordia College-Moorhead in a key Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Si Melby Hall. Thursday's victory breaks a nine-match losing streak for the Auggies to the Cobbers and is the first Augsburg win over Concordia since a 3-2 win on Sept. 14, 1999.
Augsburg (16-10 overall, 5-2 MIAC) was led offensively by three players in double figures.
Barbara Simmons (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) led the Auggies with 16 kills, followed by
Katie Christensen (JR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) with 15 and
Amanda Unze (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) with 14. Unze led Augsburg with an impressive .500 hitting percentage on the night.
Concordia (12-6 overall, 5-2 MIAC), ranked No. 18 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III national poll, was led by Jenna Green, who finished the night with match-high 33 digs and 16 kills. Katie Vohnoutka also had an impressive night for the Cobbers, posting a match-high 17 kills.
In the first two sets, Augsburg came out flat and allowed the Cobbers to cruise 25-18 and 25-16 victories. In the third set, the Auggies came alive and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Augsburg continued to increase their lead to 20-10 before Concordia made a small charge. Augsburg was able to use a pair of kills by Christensen and a kill by Simmons to close out the third set victory.
The Auggies started strong again in the fourth set, jumping out to a 12-6 lead. Concordia cut the Augsburg advantage to 18-16 before a pair of kills by Christensen forced a Cobber timeout at 22-18. The Auggies were able to capitalize on two Cobber miscues and hold on for the 25-20 win, forcing the deciding fifth set.
The fifth set was as close as they come. Both teams traded points to a 9-9 tie before kills by Simmons and Unze forced a Cobber timeout. Augsburg was able to outscore Concordia 5-1 down the stretch to claim the the thrilling come-from-behind victory.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (10/21) at 7 p.m., when it hosts St. Catherine University in MIAC action at Si Melby Hall.
