Auggies finish 2-2 at Border Battle

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College volleyball team began the MIAC-IIAC Border Battle by cruising to a 3-0 win over Buena Vista University (25-22, 25-12, 25-13) on Friday night at St.Olaf's Skoglund Center. The Auggies then met up with a tough Cornell team in the second round. After dropping the first two sets, the Auggies rallied back to take the next two and force a deciding fifth set. Augsburg was not able to hold on down the stretch and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Rams (25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 22-25, 15-12). 

On Saturday, Augsburg started the day with another tough five-set loss, falling to Luther College (25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-11). The Auggies rallied and claimed a three-set victory over Dubuque in their final match of the tournament (25-21, 25-20, 25-22).

Against Buena Vista, the Auggies were led by Barbara Simmons
(SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who recorded a team-high 13 kills. Dani Tanaka (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), posted 19 digs, while Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) claimed 31 assists.

In the Auggies five-set match against Cornell, three Augsburg players finished with double-digit kills. Leading the way was Katie Christensen (JR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Amanda Unze (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS), who both recorded 13 kills. Michelle Barum (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) posted a career-high 12 kills for the Auggies. Reed recorded 42 assists and Tanaka posted 22 digs.

Against Luther, the Auggies were led by Caitlin Batzlaff (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), who posted a career-high 15 kills. Also finishing with double-digit kills were Christensen and Simmons, who each had 14 kills and Unze who claimed 11 in the match. Defensively, Augsburg had five players post double-digit digs. Tanaka led the Auggies with 27 digs, while Reed and Jessica Hilk (JR, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) each had 16. Denielle Johnson (JR, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) posted 12 digs, while Christensen posted 13 digs for for her fifth kill-dig double-double of the year.

In Augsburg's final match against Dubuque, the Auggies were led by Simmons and Unze, who posted 11 and 10 kills respectively. Reed claimed a double-double recording 34 assists and 14 digs.

The Auggies return to action on Friday (10/9) when they travel to Macalester College to take on the Scots in MIAC action.
