Auggies top St. Kate's 1-0

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Courtney Barthel (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored the lone goal of the game in the fourth minute, and Augsburg College's defense held firm for the remainder of the contest in a 1-0 triumph over St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Barthel scored on a scramble in front of the goal off a clearing attempt by the Wildcats, as the Auggies improved to 3-4-3 overall, 1-3-1 in MIAC play. St. Catherine is now 3-5-2 overall, 0-4-1 in MIAC play.

"It's obviously great to win," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "The team has been through a lot, both on and off the field, the last three weeks and this win definitely helps."

Augsburg goalkeeper Katie Flakne (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Holy Angels HS) picked up her second collegiate shutout in goal, collecting two saves as the Auggies outshot the Wildcats by a 19-6 margin. Bridget Berry (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian HS) had five saves in goal for St. Catherine.

Augsburg controlled possession for most of the game, as the Auggies' midfield and defense stopped most of the Wildcats entries into the offensive zone before shots could be attempted. Meanwhile, Auggie forward Lacey Hoover (JR, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) had seven shots on the evening, while four players had two shots each -- Barthel, Becky Solheim (SR, Waconia, Minn.), Courtney Gamrath (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS).

"I simply told the team to just go out and play and have fun," Navarre said. "It's a privilege to attend Augsburg and play for our program, and we just needed to remember that being together and working hard for each other is what is most important."

Christina Paik (FY, Beaverton, Ore./Sunset HS) had two shots for St. Catherine.

Augsburg hosts St. Scholastica in nonconference action on Wednesday (10/7) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson FIeld, while St. Catherine hosts Macalester on Tuesday (10/6) at 4 p.m.

"Now we take on a solid St. Scholastica team that has been winning their conference consistently," Navarre said. "We always have great games with St. Scholastica, so we are expecting another tough challenge from them on Wednesday."
