MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College volleyball team fell to the University of St. Thomas on Saturday in a three-set match at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall, falling 25-9, 25-18 and 25-11. Despite the loss to the Tommies, the Auggies claimed a berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason playoffs, earning the No. 4 seed.
As the fourth seed, the Auggies will host No. 5 seed Concordia-Moorhead on Tuesday (11/3) at 7 p.m. in quarterfinal action at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg and Concordia played a thrilling five-set match on Oct. 15, with the Auggies prevailing for their first win over the Cobbers since 1999. The winner of the Augsburg/Concordia match will move on to face top-seeded St. Benedict on Thursday (11/5) in semifinal action in St. Joseph, Minn.
The Auggies (17-13 overall, 6-5 MIAC) claimed their first berth in the MIAC postseason playoffs since the conference went to its current six-team playoff format in 2001.
For the match, Augsburg was led offensively by
Barbara Simmons (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and
Katie Christensen (JR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), who posted eight and seven kills respectively.
Lauren Butler (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) led Augsburg defensively with 11 digs, while setter
Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) posted 19 assists.
St. Thomas, ranked No. 10 nationally, was led by the duo of Katie Bonine and Tori Jones, who posted 17 and 11 kills respectively. Setter Emily Foster posted 40 assists, while libero Kaitlin Wachter recorded a game-high 14 digs.
