Auggies sweep Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Amanda Unze (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) recorded her ninth double-digit kill performance of the season in leading the Augsburg College volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday night at the Leonard Center. Set scores were: 25-23, 25-13, 25-22.

The opening set of the evening began very evenly matched, as the two teams found themselves tied numerous times. At 17-17 the Auggies were able to put together their first big run of the night, capitalizing on two kills from Unze, a pair hitting errors by the Scots and a big service ace from Katie Christensen (JR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) as Augsburg took a 22-17 lead. The Auggies were able to hang on down the stretch and take the 25-23 win from the host Scots.

In the second set, after being tied 8-8, the Auggies outscored the Scots 17-5 and cruised to an easy 25-13 win. Augsburg held Macalester to a -.060 hitting percentage, while hitting .219 as a team.

Macalester jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to start the third set before the Auggies were able to rally back and take an 8-7 advantage. Both teams battled to a 22-22 tie before Augsburg was able to utilize kills from Christensen and Barbara Simmons (SR, Minneapolis, Minn. / South HS) to take a 24-22 lead. A service ace by Christensen sealed the win for the Auggies.

For the match, Augsburg was led by Unze with 10 kills and Simmons with four blocks (one solo). Defensively, Dani Tanaka (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Jessica Hilk (JR, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) teammed up for 15 and 10 digs respectively. Setter Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) finished the night with 33 assists.

Macalester was led by Majra Mucic, who led all players with 13 kills. Kiera Coulter posted a match-high 20 digs for the Scots, while Danielle Dweck posted 34 assists.

The Auggies return to action Saturday (10/10) at 3 p.m., when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf College in a key MIAC matchup.
