MINNEAPOLIS -- Outgaining the hosts by a 305-100 margin, the St. John's University football team claimed a 28-7 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Tyler Judkins (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) returned an interception 93 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter -- one yard shy of a school record -- for the lone score of the game for Augsburg (4-5 overall, 3-4 MIAC).
Kellen Blaser (SR, Austin, Minn./Pacelli HS) scored two touchdowns for St. John's (9-0 overall, 7-0 MIAC), the No. 4-ranked team in the country. The Johnnies clinched a share of the MIAC championship with the victory in the season's penultimate game.
The Johnnies rushed for 213 yards, while their defense held Augsburg to zero net rushing yards and 100 passing yards in the game.
Augsburg quarterback
Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) completed 15-of-32 passes for 100 yards.
Linebacker
Adam Mead (JR, St. Francis, Minn.), the MIAC's leading tackler, claimed 14 tackles (three solo) to lead all players in the game.
Josh Collins (JR, Rosemount, Minn.) had 12 tackles, while
Alex Glasenapp (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had 11 tackles and
Adam Ebert (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 10 tackles and a sack.
St. John's led from the opening kickoff, when Kevin Wenner (FY, St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) recovered a fumble on the Auggies' return and ran the ball in from 16 yards out. The Johnnies scored again midway through the first quarter, as Blaser rushed in from two yards.
An 18-play, 98-yard drive covering 10:28 gave the Johnnies a 21-0 lead, capped on a 21-yard pass from John Ries (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) to Blaser.
Augsburg's Judkins claimed his team-leading third interception of the season, coming within a yard of the school record for an interception return, a 94-yarder by Bob Dorgan in a 1979 game against Gustavus.
St. John's capped the scoring in the final minute, as Kerry Daigs (FY, Los Angeles, Calif./Verbum Dei HS) scored from three yards out after Augsburg turned the ball over on downs, giving the Johnnies the ball on the Augsburg 17.
Three players gained 50-plus yards on the ground for the Johnnies -- Blaser had 15 carries for 59 yards, Jakob Reding (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) rushed 10 times for 69 yards, and Stephen Johnson (FY, Mahtomedi, Minn.) rushed 15 times for 65 yards.
Both teams complete their regular seasons next Saturday (11/14) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg plays at Bethel and St. John's hosts Carleton.
