Brett Sorenson led Augsburg with 20 points and nine rebounds as the Auggies claimed a 68-65 nonconference win over Sagrado Corazon on a winter break trip to Puerto Rico. With the win, Augsburg moves to 5-2 overall (1-2 MIAC).
Augsburg finished with three players in double figures. Sorensen led the way hitting a season-high 20 points on a 7-for-10 shooting performance from the field.
David Olson and
Cory Polta each had 10 points apiece for Augsburg, while
Jon Cassens posted a game-high 11 rebounds and six assists.
Sagrado Corazon was led by Sedi Orsini, who scored a game-high 23 points, connecting on 5-for-9 from behind the arc. Also scoring in double-figures was Edgardo Rodriguez, who had 17 points and five rebounds.
Augsburg led by as many as nine points in the second half but Sagrado went on a 12-5 run to bring the score within two at 51-49 with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest. The Auggies built their lead back up to seven but Sagrado would rally again to tie the score at 57-57 with 4:39 left to play. Augsburg held a one point lead with 10 seconds remaining on the clock and Cassens was able to hit a pair of free throws to put Augsburg up by three. The Auggies forced a Sagrado turnover with three seconds left to play to hold on for the thrilling 68-65 win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the field, while Sagrado hit 37.0 percent (20-of-54). The Auggies grabbed a narrow 36-35 advantage on the boards and were able to outscore Sagrado 38-24 in points in the paint.
Augsburg returns to action on Monday (12/28) at 1 p.m. when it hosts George Fox University in the Auggies final nonconference contest of the season.
