MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg's
Serenae Levine (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn.) posted her first double-double of the season and second of her career as the Auggies upset St. Catherine University 79-74 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Si Melby Hall on Saturday.
Augsburg (1-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC) was led by Levine's 16-point, 13-rebound effort. She also added four assists and five steals on the afternoon. Newcomer
Brittany Dyshaw (FY, Eagan, Minn.) posted a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds, while
Shannon Renne (JR, Nicollet, Minn.) scored a season-high 23 points on a 5-for-9 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
St. Catherine (2-2 overall, 1-1 MIAC) was led by Molly Peterson's 17 points and six rebounds. Sonja Ellingson nearly claimed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats.
After a very evenly matched first half, St. Catherine led 37-34 at the intermission. The Wildcats built their lead led up to as many as nine before Augsburg could mount a rally. The Auggies tied things up at 54-54 off a pair of free throws by Levine with just over 10 minutes to play. St. Kate's regained the lead at 65-62 but Renne came back on the very next possession and hit a key three-pointer to tie things back up. Renne's three sparked a 10-0 run for the Auggies, giving them a seven point advantage with 3:46 left to play. St. Kate's whittled the Augsburg lead down to 73-71 but was not able to overcome the Auggies as foul trouble became a factor down the stretch and Augsburg was able to hit four free throws in the final 24 seconds to claim the 79-74 win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 34.4 percent (22-of-64) from the field, while St. Kate's connected on 39.3 percent (24-of-61). Both teams finished with an identical 43 rebounds while the Auggies claimed a narrow victory in the turnover battle 26-28.
Both teams return to action on Monday (12/7) with the Auggies traveling to St. Paul to take on the University of St. Thomas and St. Kate's traveling to St. Joseph to take on the College of St. Benedict.
