St. Paul, Minn. -- Despite a 19-4 run by the Auggies late in the second half to cut the St. Thomas lead to single digits, the Tommies were able to convert on their free throws down the stretch and claim the 78-63 win over Augsburg.
Augsburg (1-2 overall, 1-2 MIAC) was led by
Lexi Thompson (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), who scored a team-high 14 points and six rebounds. Also finishing in double-figures for Augsburg was
Serenae Levine (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Brittany Dyshaw (FY, Eagan, Minn.), who each posted 11 points on the night.
Ashley Erickson (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) posted a career-high five assists to go along with eight points and two rebounds.
St. Thomas (5-1 overall, 2-1 MIAC) was led by Rachel Booth, who posted the only double-double of the night with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Also finishing in double-figures were Jazmin Townsend and Carolyn Dienhart, who finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.
The first 10 minutes of the first half were fairly evenly matched. The Auggies used a jumper by Erickson and a 3-pointer by
Shannon Renne (JR, Nicollet, Minn./Nicollet HS) to bring the score to 25-22 in favor of the Tommies with 7:35 remaining in the first. Augsburg wasn't able to convert offensively for the remainder of the half, as the Tommies closed the first period with a 15-0 run.
At the 13:52 mark of the second period, the Auggies mounted their rally, a 19-4 run that cut the St. Thomas lead to 58-49. Augsburg was able to get withing eight but couldn't get any closer as the Auggies fell to the Tommies 78-63.
For the game, Augsburg shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63), while the Tommies shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor. Augsburg claimed a 28-16 advantage in turnovers, while St. Thomas claimed a 47-23 advantage on the boards. Bench scoring played a large role in the contest with the Tommies outscoring the Auggies 43-11.
Augsburg and St. Thomas both return to action on Wednesday with the Auggies traveling to St. Peter to take on Gustavus, while St. Thomas travels to Winona to take on St. Mary's University.
