Women's Basketball 2/18/09 -- Carleton 65, Augsburg 48
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/18/09) -- Serenae Levine (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn.) led Augsburg College with a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Auggies dropped a 65-48 Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball game to Carleton College on Wednesday night at Carleton's West Gymnasium.
Augsburg (4-20 overall, 2-19 MIAC) was led by Levine's 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Also playing well for the Auggies was Jacci Mattern (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) and Christa Suedbeck (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS). Mattern posted eight points and four rebounds, on a 4-for-8 shooting performance, while Suedbeck posted five points, six rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot.
Carleton (11-13 overall, 10-11 MIAC) was led by Hannah Oken-Berg (SR, Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS), who posted the only double-double of the night with a 18-point, 13-rebound effort to go along with three blocked shots. Ally Weaver (SO, Iowa City, Iowa/West HS) recorded 14 points for the Knights and Sarah Lincoln (SR, Rockford, Minn./Rockford HS) added nine rebounds.
The Auggies struggled offensively to find their rhythm in the first half, as they were outscored 19-4 over the first nine-and-a-half minutes of play. Augsburg was only able to convert on 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from the floor in the first half and was down 37-16 at the half. The Knights continued their strong play in the second half, holding the Auggies to 29.9 percent (20-of-67) shooting from the floor for the game, while Carleton converted on 45.1 percent (23-of-51). Augsburg won the turnover battle, forcing 24 Carleton turnovers while committing only 17, but the Knights won the battle on the boards 44-36 and claimed a 24-12 advantage in points in the paint.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (2/21), when it travels to Winona to take on St. Mary's University in a men's and women's doubleheader. Women's action begins at 1 p.m. and the men tip off at 3 p.m.
