Auggies fall 34-21 at Wartburg

BOXSCORE

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Augsburg College nearly rallied from a 24-7, third-quarter deficit, but could not overcome Wartburg College (Iowa) in a 34-21 loss in a nonconference football contest on Saturday night at Wartburg's Walston-Hoover Stadium.

Quarterback Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) completed 29-of-61 passing for 337 yards and also rushed for a three-yard touchdown late in the third quarter for Augsburg (1-1 overall), while James Strand (SR, Brainerd, Minn.) and Waylon Hartwick (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) also scored touchdowns for the Auggies.

Wartburg (1-1) quarterback Nick Yordi threw for just 191 yards, but connected on two touchdown passes that gave the Knights a 24-7 lead early in the third quarter. Four different Knights scored touchdowns on the evening, two rushing and two receiving.

The Auggie rally started with a six-play, 60-yard drive that culminated in a two-yard rushing score by Hartwick with 6:59 left in the third quarter. Augsburg converted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but could not claim a score on the possession, turning the ball over on downs at midfield.

However, on Augsburg's final drive of the third quarter, sparked by a fumble forced by Adam Mead (JR, St. Francis, Minn.) and recovered by Nick Larson (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) at the Knight 3-yard-line, the Auggies scored on a Brumm three-yard run with four seconds left in the quarter.

The Auggie defense held firm when it counted on the next drive, stopping the Knights on fourth-down and goal at the Augsburg 2-yard line. But five plays later, a Brumm pass was intercepted by the Knights, and the hosts drove 49 yards to score on a 35-yard touchdown by Reese Thompson with 6:35 remaining. Brumm was intercepted again on the next drive, and Marcus Williams converted a 27-yard field goal with 4:26 left to cap the scoring.

Wartburg outgained Augsburg by a 460-361 margin, including 269 rushing yards. Augsburg threw for 337 yards, but was held to just 24 net rushing yards. Wartburg running back Thompson rushed 26 times for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Mike Nourie (SR, Nicollet, Minn.) caught 10 passes for 103 yards for the Auggies, while Muneer Al-Hameed (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught nine passes for 119 yards. Tight end Josh Pronschinske (JR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) caught seven passes for 70 yards.

Defensively, Mead led all players with 12 tackles (six solo), including a tackle for loss. Adam Ebert (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 11 tackles (five solo), and Tyler Phillips (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Alex Glasenapp (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had nine tackles each. For Wartburg, Andrew Creary had eight tackles, and Josh VandenHul had seven tackles.

Augsburg is idle next Saturday, and opens its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference campaign on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m., with a game at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
