Auggie volleyball at Simpson Invite

The Augsburg College volleyball team had a tough weekend at the Simpson Invitational, finishing in eighth place with a 1-3 overall record. The Auggies started strong with a five-set victory over Wartburg College (25-14, 22-25,23-25, 25-23, 15-13) but then fell to Bethel College (25-15, 25-12,19-25,25-12) and Carthage College (25-13, 25-16, 25-15) in pool play. On tie-breaking criteria, the Auggies were seeded into the 7th/8th place match, where they dropped a 3-0 decision to Northwestern College (25-17, 25-17, 25-18).

Offensively, Augsburg was led by the duo of Katie Christensen (JR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Barbara Simmons (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who finished the tournament with 36 and 32 kills respectively. Korri Yule (JR, Medford, Minn.) also had a strong showing for Augsburg recording 27 kills, good for a 1.80 kills per-set average. Other Auggies finishing with double-digit kills were Lauren Butler (FY, Burnsville, Minn.), Amanda Unze (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) and Erin Jugasek  (JR, Big Lake, Minn.), who recorded 18, 17 and 12 kills respectively. 

Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) dished out 121 assists for Augsburg, while Denielle Johnson (JR, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) chipped in 13. At the net, Simmons continued to pace the Auggies, putting up 11 blocks (four solo), while Yule added seven blocks (three solo). 

Defensively, Dani Tanaka (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led Augsburg with 105 digs, posting a 7.00 digs per-set average. Jessica Hilk (JR, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) and Reed added 42 and 33 digs respectively. Hilk and Reed also paced the Auggies with four service aces apeice.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/23) at 7 p.m., when it host Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Hamline University at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall. Check out athletics.augsburg.edu for live video, audio and statistics.
