BOXSCORE | AUGSBURG GAME NOTES (PDF)

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Augsburg College held a 14-7 lead at halftime, but could not overcome 17 unanswered points in the second half by St. Olaf College, as the Oles claimed a 24-14 win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf's Manitou Field.

Waylon Hartwick (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored touchdowns for Augsburg (1-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC).

St. Olaf (3-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC) quarterback John Haberman completed 20-of-30 passes for 310 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score.

The game proved to be a tale of two halves. In the first half, Augsburg produced 178 yards of total offense, compared to just 106 for the Oles. However, the Oles outgained Augsburg by a 213-138 margin in the second half, as four of the six second-half drives by the Auggies ended in punts.

Augsburg opened the game strong, as an 11-play, 75-yard drive was capped by an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Hartwick, his team-leading third touchdown of the season. Hartwick accounted for 49 of the 75 yards on the drive -- 25 yards on the ground and 24 receiving yards.

The Oles tied the game on their first drive of the second quarter, as Haberman scored on a quarterback sneak from a yard out, but Augsburg answered late in the first half. A 17-yard quarterback sack by Andrew Bergeson (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) and Genshi Tezuka (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) forced the Oles to punt and gave the Auggies good field position, with the ball at the St. Olaf 38. Five plays later, Brumm rushed three yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

Augsburg's defense sacked Haberman three times in the game, with Tezuka recording 1.5 sacks. Josh Collins (JR, Rosemount, Minn.) also had a solo sack for the Auggies. The Auggie defense also held firm against the run, limiting the Oles to just nine net rushing yards in the game.

St. Olaf responded in the second half, as its opening drive of the third quarter resulted in a six-play, 51-yard drive and a one-yard rushing touchdown by Kevin Foss to tie the game at 14-14.

The Oles took the lead midway through the fourth quarter. After an Augsburg field-goal attempt was blocked, the Oles took the ball and went nine plays and 61 yards, with a 33-yard field goal by Josiah Powell the result.

The next Augsburg drive was stalled at the St. Olaf 45 with 5:47 left, and a 39-yard punt by Jack Christopherson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) gave the Oles the ball at their own 6-yard line. However, on a third-down-and-six from the Ole 10, Haberman found Antonio Jennings open on the right sideline, and he sprinted 90 yards for the game-clinching touchdown.

Brumm threw for 249 yards on 24-of-53 passing, with Hartwick catching six passes for 60 yards. Hartwick also rushed 12 times for 39 yards. Mike Nourie (SR, Nicollet, Minn.) caught five passes for 61 yards, Muneer Al-Hameed (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught five passes for 54 yards, and Josh Pronschinske (JR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) caught five passes for 47 yards.

Jennings' 90-yard reception was a big chunk of his 162 receiving yards on five catches for the Oles. Foss rushed 21 times for 46 yards.

Defensively, Adam Mead (JR, St. Francis, Minn.) led the Auggies with eight tackles, including three tackles for loss. John Hibbs (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) had seven tackles, and Adam Ebert (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had an interception. Adam Concannon had 10 tackles, including a sack, to lead the Ole defense.

Both teams return to MIAC play next Saturday (10/3) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Hamline for Homecoming, while St. Olaf plays at crosstown rival Carleton.
