MINNEAPOLIS -- Putting together 537 yards of total offense, including 335 yards of passing from quarterback
Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) in his Augsburg College debut, the Auggies claimed a 44-13 victory over visiting Crown College in a nonconference football game on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field, in the season-opening game for both teams.
Brumm, a transfer from Division II Minnesota State-Mankato, completed 19-of-31 passing for 335 yards and three touchdowns. Seven different Auggies caught passes, and five different Auggies scored touchdowns.
Augsburg (1-0) scored on five of its first six possessions to open the game, building a 31-0 lead before Crown (0-1) scored twice in the final 3:33 of the first half.
Muneer Al-Hameed (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught five passes for 100 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown pass from Brumm in the third quarter.
Josh Pronschinske (JR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) caught five passes for 79 yards, and
Mike Nourie (SR, Nicollet, Minn.) caught four passes for 88 yards, including a 48-yard second-quarter touchdown pass from Brumm.
Crown quarterback Steve Boger (JR, Cokato, Minn./Holy Trinity HS) threw for 201 yards on 18-of-31 passes with two touchdowns, a nine-yard pass to Drew Milner (SR, Sheridan, Wyo.) and a 30-yard pass to Robert Yang (JR, Clovis, Calif.), both late in the second quarter.
The Auggies' first touchdown came on defense, as
Adam Mead (JR, St. Francis, Minn.) stripped the ball and returned the fumble 59 yards for a touchdown with 11:42 left in the first quarter. After a 22-yard field goal by
Jack Christopherson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and Brumm's touchdown pass to Nourie, running back
Waylon Hartwick (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored on a 24-yard rush, followed by a 13-yard scoring stroke from Brumm to
Cameron Krugerud (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), giving the Auggies a 31-0 lead.
Al-Hameed scored on the Auggies' opening drive of the third quarter, and
James Strand (SR, Brainerd, Minn.) capped the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown rush late in the third frame. For the Auggies, Strand rushed for 56 yards on five carries and Hartwick had six carries for 50 yards.
Yang caught six passes for 67 yards for Crown, while Milner caught five passes for 89 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg's Mead led all players with 11 tackles (six solo), while
Tyler Phillips (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had nine tackles (five solo).
Adam Ebert (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had eight tackles (two solo), and
Josh Collins (JR, Rosemount, Minn.) had six tackles, including a sack and three tackles for loss.
Aaron Perry (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and
Brady Soule (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) also had quarterback sacks.
For Crown, Luke Urbaniak (SR, Argyle, Minn./Stephen-Argyle HS) and Brandon Green (SO, Butler, Pa./Knock HS) had eight tackles apiece.
Both teams return to action next Saturday (9/12), as Augsburg travels to face Wartburg (Iowa) at 7 p.m., while Crown hosts Macalester at 1 p.m.
