Last-second 2OT shot gives Auggies win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ben Flavin (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) hit a running jumper with seven-tenths of a second left in the second overtime, giving Augsburg College a 73-70 victory over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Following the shot and a Carleton turnover, Augsburg (11-3 overall, 6-3 MIAC) scored a point on a free throw for the final margin of victory, giving the Auggies their seventh win in their last eight games.

Marcus Brumm (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) came off the bench to lead Auggies with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Brett Sorenson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored 11 points with six rebounds, and Matthew Quammen (JR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) scored 11 points.

For Carleton (7-7 overall, 3-6 MIAC), Bryan Rosett (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds, to go along with four blocked shots. Seth Jonker (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) scored a game-high 20 points with six rebounds and three blocked shots, and Jeremy Sutherland (JR, Apple Valley, Minn./St. Bernard's HS) had 18 points, seven assiss and four rebounds.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team led by more than 10 points. A 12-0 run gave the Knights a 55-53 lead with 3:17 left in the second half, but the Auggies rallied to take a one-point lead, 59-58, with 1:23 left in regulation. The Knights tied it on a free throw with 1:05 left in regulation -- one of nine ties in the game, which also featured 12 lead changes.

Both teams scored four points in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Augsburg took a 69-66 lead with 1:40 left, but the Knights trimmed the lead to one points on a Sutherland layup with1:25 left. Augsburg's Flavin went 1-of-2 at the free-throw line with 22 seconds remaining, and the Knights tied the game on a jumper by Sutherland with eight seconds left, setting the stage for Flavin's heroics.

Augsburg scored 22 points off of 19 Carleton turnovers, while the Auggie bench outscored the Knights' bench by a 35-9 margin. Carleton had eight blocked shots in the game.

Both teams return to action on Monday (1/18) at 7:45 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Mary's and Carleton hosting Bethel.
