Augsburg makes it four in a row with win over SMU

WINONA, Minn. -- Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SO, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) tied a career-high five blocked shots and finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor as he led the Auggies to their fourth consecutive win with a 73-66 victory over St. Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at SMU's field house.

Grzesiak-Grimm finished with nine points and tied teammate Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) with a team-high six rebounds. Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.), Matthew Quammen (JR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) and David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) all finished in double-figures for the Auggies, with Cassens and Quammen hitting 13 and Olson scoring 12 points for Augsburg which moves to 12-3 overall (7-3 MIAC) with the win.

St. Mary's (5-10 overall, 3-7 MIAC) was led by Will Wright (JR, Chicago, Ill./Marist HS), who led all players with 19 points, while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Chris Palmer (FY, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and added 13 points for the Cardinals.

Neither team could seem to pull away as things were tied up at 48-48 with 9:02 remaining in the second half. Augsburg was able to put together a 17-3 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes, giving Augsburg the largest lead of the evening a 65-51 advantage. St. Mary's was able to chip the Augsburg lead down to five with just under two minutes to play but the Auggies were able to convert on 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to claim the 73-66 win over the Cardinals.

For the game, Augsburg shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, while holding St. Mary's to 39.7 percent (25-of-63). St. Mary's claimed a narrow 39-37 advantage on the boards but Augsburg won the battle in the paint outscoring the Cardinals 34-24.

Augsburg and St. Mary's both return to action on Wednesday (1/20) when the Auggies host Hamline University and the Cardinals host Macalester College.
