Augsburg drops MIAC contest to Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Ashley Erickson (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) provided a spark for the Auggies off the bench, hitting 4-for-7 from the floor, but Augsburg couldn't keep up with Macalester who is off to its best-ever conference start as the Auggies fell 84-50 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at the Leonard Center.

Augsburg (1-10 overall, 1-7 MIAC) was led by Erickson's eight points, while Kylee Persing (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) led the Auggies on the boards with a career-high five rebounds. Lexi Thompson (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) led Augsburg with three assists and six points, finishing 3-for-6 from the floor.

Macalester (7-4 overall, 7-1 MIAC) finished with four players in double-figures, led by a 22-point, 9-for-18 performance from Ann Blatzer, who also added a game-high eight rebounds.

Augsburg jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead off a jumper by Thompson and a layup by Tracee Schrank (FY, Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area HS) in the first two minutes of action. The two teams traded baskets for the next few minutes before Macalester was able to string together a 21-4 run. The Scots held a 43-21 lead as the teams headed into the locker room at the half.

For the second consecutive game, the half-time deficit proved too much for the Auggies to overcome. Augsburg shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the floor, including a tough day from beyond the arc (0-for-11).  Macalester connected on 44.9 percent (31-of-69) of it shots and outrebounded Augsburg 47-30.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (1/13) when it travels to Arden Hills, Minn. to take on Bethel University in MIAC action.
