NORTHFIELD, Minn. --
Marcus Brumm (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns, and running back
Phil Putratz (FY, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) rushed for a career-high 123 yards and two scores, but the Augsburg College football team dropped a 38-28 decision to host Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.
Brumm eclipsed the 4,000-yard barrier in career passing in just his 15th start for Augsburg (3-2 overall, 1-2 MIAC). He now has 4,189 yards on 368-of-678 passing with 27 touchdowns in his Auggie career, after his 38-of-54 passing performance in Saturday's contest.
Meanwhile, Putratz rushed 13 times for a career-high 123 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns -- a 10-yarder and a 43-yarder -- as part of an Auggie attack that produced 462 yards of total offense in the game.
But Carleton (2-2 overall, 2-1 MIAC) overcame a 28-24 deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to secure the victory. Knight quarterback Vaughn Schmid completed 20-of-31 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, and running back John Lien rushed 24 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns -- a seven-yarder in the first quarter and a 13-yarder to cap the scoring with 43 seconds to go in the game.
Saturday's game was played at Northfield High School's Memorial Field, after Carleton's stadium, Laird Stadium, was flooded during a recent storm.
Augsburg wide receiver
Muneer Al-Hameed (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught 11 passes for 99 yards, marking his 34th straight game with at least one pass reception in his collegiate career. Teammate
Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) caught 11 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, and tight end
Josh Pronschinske (SR, Fountain City, WIs./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) caught eight passes for 67 yards and a touchdown.
The Auggies trailed 14-0 after the first quarter, as the Knights took the lead on a 4-yard touchdown run by Schmid and a seven-yard touchdown run by Lien. Putratz's 10-yard scoring run put the Auggies on the board, and after a Carleton field goal, the Auggies cut the lead to 17-14 on Putratz's 43-yard breakaway run for a score.
The Knights took a 24-14 lead on a Schmid 22-yard pass to Killian Murphy with 1:43 to play in the first half, but Augsburg marched 57 yards in just 51 seconds to cut the lead to 24-21, with the final play a Brumm four-yard pass to Pronschinske.
Augsburg took its only lead of the game late in the third quarter, as a seven-play, 46-yard drive was capped by a 11-yard pass from Brumm to Bourne-McFarlane. But the Knights took the lead on a 34-yard pass from Schmid to Brian Frett early in the fourth quarter, and Lien's 13-yard run in the final minute closed the scoring.
Defensively,
Tyler Phillips (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) led the Auggies with nine tackles (six solo), while
