MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College volleyball team dropped a thrilling five-set match to No. 12-ranked St. Olaf College, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 11-25, 15-6 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
After falling behind early in the first set, the Auggies (13-12 overall, 3-3 MIAC) rallied to win a close second set 25-21. Augsburg fell behind in the third game, but rebounded to win game four 25-11. The Auggies pulled to within five points in the fifth and final match, but could not get any closer.
The St. Olaf (18-5 overall, 5-1 MIAC) front-line accounted for 55 kills in the match, compared to 46 for Augsburg.
Augsburg outside hitters
Colleen Ourada (FY, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) and
Katie Christensen (SR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) led the Auggies offensively, recording 15 and 13 kills respectively, while Augsburg setter
Emily McCourt (FY, Sun Prairie, Wis.) recorded 36 assists for the Auggies.
Two Auggies recorded double-digit dig totals, led by
Jessica Hilk (SR, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) with 14,and
Denielle Johnson (SR, Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) added 11.
The Oles were led offensively by Kim Smisek (SR, Northfield, Minn.) and Ariel Carlson (SO, Farwell, Minn./Alexandria Jefferson HS.) Smisek recorded a team high 18 kills and 17 digs for the Oles, while Carlson recorded 14 kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Setter Kelly Prunty (SR, Welcome, Minn./Martin County West HS) recorded 45 assists in the match.
Augsburg is off until Wednesday (10/13) when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to face conference foe Carleton College. The Auggies next and final home contest of the season will be on Oct. 22 against Bethel University. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
