GAME BOXSCORE
WHITEWATER, Wis. -- Augsburg College's record-setting men's soccer season came to an end on Sunday evening, as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scored a 3-0 victory in a second-round NCAA Division III national tournament game at Fiskum Field.
Trevor Swentik had a goal and assist for Wisconsin-Whitewater (14-2-3 overall), which will play Calvin (Mich.) in the third round of the national playoffs at a site and date to be determined. Sean Gilbert and Dan Montanye also scored goals for the Warhawks.
Augsburg (16-5-1 overall), the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff champion, closed its season with a school-record 16 victories, its fourth double-digit victory season in the last five years.
"We have a lot to be proud of. This is the winningest season in Augsburg's history, we've lifted a trophy for the first time since 1980, and this senior class leaves us after making two appearances in the NCAA championships," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "On top of that, this group has made our family bigger, stronger, and more powerful. Every single one of these guys would give everything for his teammate, for our alumni, and for Augsburg soccer."
Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) collected two saves in goal for Augsburg, which was outshot by a 12-9 margin.
Chad Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Benjamin Wexler (SR, Minnetonka, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) had two shots each for the Auggies.
Gilbert scored for the Warhawks in the 43rd minute, blasting a shot from the right side of the penalty box which bounced off of the left inside post and into the net.
Swentik's goal came in the 53rd minute, as he pushed the ball past a defender, ran parallel to the goal and put it in the net. Montanye followed with a goal in the 68th minute, taking a pass from Tim Windler and converting it for the goal.
"We had our chances. Wexler put one right into the stomach of (Whitewater goalkeeper) Matt Mikesell from six yards just before their 22-yard bomb off the post broke the deadlock. Gilmer rattled the bar off
Peter Osborn's (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) free kick and Mikesell stopped Mohamed Sankoh (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and
Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) on two other clear chances. Despite the final scoreline, we were in this game," Holker said. "Whitewater deserved to advance. They were extremely efficient in the final third and a well-rounded, talented group. We wish them the best."
The game was the final contest for four Augsburg seniors -- forward Wexler, midfielder #T.J. Haag# (SR, Apple Valley, Minn./Burnsville HS), midfielder
Van Hong (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) and defender
Joe Keller (SR, Wayzata, Minn.).
