Auggies top Westminster in tourney opener

LINCOLN, Neb. – Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) scored 18 points, connecting on five 3-pointers, leading the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 74-60 victory over Westminster College (Mo.) in the opening game of the Nebraska Wesleyan University Snyder Classic on Friday evening at Snyder Arena.

Quammen connected on 5-of-8 three-pointers, leading a strong-shooting Augsburg (3-0 overall) attack. Quammen also led the Auggies with six assists. In the game, Augsburg shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the field, including 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from three-point range.

Augsburg will face host Nebraska Wesleyan in Saturday's (11/27) tournament final at 7:30 p.m. Nebraska Wesleyan topped Presentation (S.D.) 87-76 in the other tournament game on Friday.

Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and Andy Seidlitz (FY, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) came off the bench to score 15 points, including four 3-pointers, on 5-of-7 shooting from the field (4-of-6 from three-point range).

Westminster (1-2 overall), an NCAA Division III national tournament team last season, was led by Jake Vislay, who scored 20 points and had five rebounds. Justin Gilmore scored 11 points.

An 11-0 run midway through the first half, with Seidlitz scoring eight straight points, gave the Auggies a 25-16 advantage, a lead the Auggies would not relinquish the rest of the way. Augsburg led 45-29 at halftime, and the lead did not dip below double digits in the second half, eventually stretching to as many as 19 points.

Fifteen Auggies saw playing time in the game, with 11 scoring. Parker Hines (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored seven points, while Anthony Humphrey (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored six points each.
