Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) led Augsburg College with his first double-double of the season, but the Auggies weren't able to hang on for the win, as they fell to Carleton College 56-52 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Carleton's West Gym.
Polta, connected on 6-of-9 from the field and added four blocked shots on the afternoon. Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was
Parker Hines (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy),
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) and
Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS). Hines scored a career-high 13 points for the Auggies and added a pair of assists and steals, while Grzesiak-Grimm and Quammen each chipped in 11 points.
Carleton had two players finish in double figures, led by Caleb Rosenow, who came off the bench to score 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
In a game that was close from start to finish, where neither team lead by more than seven points at any time, the Auggies and Knights found themselves tied at 45-45 with 8:10 left to play. A layup by
Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at the 2:54 mark gave Augsburg a 49-48 advantage, which proved to be the last time the Auggies would lead. Carleton converted offensively from the field and at the free throw line over the final two and a half minutes and was able to claim a 56-52 win over the Auggies.
Augsburg outshot Carleton, connecting on 45.5 percent of its shots (20-of-44) in comparison to Carleton's 41.5 percent (22-of-53). The Auggies also held a 28-27 advantage on the boards but lost the turnover battle, committing 17 turnovers in compared to 12 for the Knights.
Augsburg and Carleton both return to action on Monday (12/6) with Augsburg playing host to St. Thomas and Carleton traveling to Concordia-Moorhead.
