Augsburg and Hamline had nine ties and 10 lead changes in a wild game in St. Paul. Augsburg used a 10-3 run to start the second half and gain some momentum back from the hot-shooting Pipers, who connected on 60 percent (15-of-25) of their shots in first half. Neither team would lead by more than four over the final two-thirds of the second half as both teams traded baskets in a thrilling half of basketball.
A pair of free throws by Grzesiak-Grimm with just over two minutes to play put the score at 89-88 in favor of the Pipers. Hamline's Campbell hit a jumper 30 seconds later which was immediately countered by a jumper by Augsburg's
Brett Sorenson to make the score 91-90. Hamline made a free throw to go up by two with 12 seconds left but the Auggies weren't done as Hines stole the ball and proceeded to make a short jump shot to tie the score at 92-92 and send the game to overtime.
The overtime session proved to be just as exciting with both teams making plays down the stretch. Augsburg's Seidlitz hit a jump shot with 17 seconds left to bring the score to 100-98 in favor of the Pipers. Augsburg was then forced to foul, putting Hamline's Brandon Rieg at the line where he converted on both shots to give the Pipers a four-point advantage with 15 seconds to play. Augsburg had a good three-point look with 13 remaining but was not able to convert at the Pipers collected the rebound and hung on for the win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 49.3 percent (36-of-73), while the Pipers hit 53.4 percent (31-of-58) of their shots. Augsburg claimed season-highs in points (98) and assists (22) in the contest.
Augsburg returns to action on Dec. 18 when it travels to Mankato, Minn. to take on Bethany Lutheran College.
