NORTHFIELD, Minn. --
Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) scored a season-high 14 points but it wasn't enough as Augsburg dropped a 68-60 overtime heartbreaker to Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Carleton's West Gymnasium.
Augsburg (16-7 overall, 11-7 MIAC) was led by Polta's 14 points, which included a 6-for-10 shooting performance, to which he added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Marcus Brumm (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) also finished in double figures for Augsburg with 11 points and six rebounds.
Carleton (14-9 overall, 10-8 MIAC) was led by Seth Jonker, who finished with a double double, scoring 21 points and adding 12 rebounds.
Carleton ended the first half on a 9-2 run and took 27-20 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Knights grew their lead to as many as 14 before Augsburg could rally and tie things up at 48-48 with 4:06 to play. Carleton went up by five with 1:12 left to play but a three-pointer by
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) and a pair of free throws by
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) with six seconds left tied the score at 54-54 and forced an overtime session.
Carleton started the overtime with a 7-0 run. Augsburg was able to cut the Knight lead to five on three separate occasions but couldn't get any closer as the Knights hung on for a 68-60 overtime win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57), while the Knights converted on 41.5 percent (22-of-53) of their shots. Augsburg claimed a 37-34 advantage on the boards but lost the turnover battle committing 12, while only forcing 10.
With two conference games remaining, Augsburg and Carleton have both clinched MIAC playoff spots. Augsburg and Carleton both return to action on Wednesday (2/17) with Augsburg traveling to Bethel and Carleton traveling to Macalester as both teams attempt lock up one of the top four spots and earn the right to host a first round postseason game.
