ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team dropped a heatbreaking 59-57 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College on Thursday night in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinal action at Gus Young Court.
With the game tied 57-57, Brett Sorenson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) came up with a big offensive rebound for the Auggies and was fouled, which gave Augsburg a great opportunity to set up an out of bounds play under its basket with 10 seconds left to play. Gustavus came up with a steal, which they took coast-to-coast and coverted on a layup to go up 59-57 with four seconds left. Augsburg was able to inbound the ball at midcourt but wasn't able to get off a shot as the Gusties hung on for the two point win.
Augsburg (19-8 overal) had four players finish in double figures, led by Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.), who finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS), Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Matthew Quammen (JR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) each finished with 10 points for the Auggies.
Gustavus (16-10 overall) was led by Tyler Grey, who finished with 11 points and two rebounds.
For the game, Augsburg shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the floor, while Gustavus converted on 47.3 percent (26-of-55) of its shots. Gustavus claimed a 35-28 advantage on the boards.
Gustavus will move on to face Carleton College in the MIAC Championship, while Augsburg will wait to find out if it is a recipient of an at-large bid.
