Auggies fall in heartbreaker

GAME BOXSCORE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Courtney Gamrath (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored twice for Augsburg College, but Macalester College claimed last-minute goals near the end of regulation time and the first overtime to score a 3-2 win in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer contest on Friday evening at Macalester Stadium.

Gamrath scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the eighth minute, then broke a 1-1 tie with a penalty-kick goal in the 60th minute to give Augsburg (2-4-2 overall, 1-2-0 MIAC) the lead.

But Macalester (5-3-0 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC) tied the game on a Matena Wasend goal with 48 seconds left in regulation time, then won the game on a breakaway goal by Georgia Cloepfil goal with 1:10 left in the first overtime period. Cloepfil and Emily Bardwell had a goal and assist each for the Scots.

"Another heartbreaking loss at Macalester," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "It seems impossible how many last-second and overrtime goals we have conceded. But its not a hex or a curse -- it's on us."

Augsburg was outshot by a 19-9 margin in the game. Diana Bocklund (SO, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) had five saves in goal for the Auggies.

I'm very proud of the effort," Navarre said. "Some mental mistakes led to their goals, and I credit them for taking advantage. We have to move on and use this anguish to embolden our will."

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (9/29) at 4 p.m. with a road contest at St. Olaf.
