Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team with his fourth double-double of the season, as the Auggies scored a 68-65 come-from-behind victory over St. Mary's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Polta played one of his best games of the season thus far, recording 18 points and 11 rebounds, on an 8-of-16 shooting night, while adding four blocked shots and an assist.
Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) also had a solid night for Augsburg (11-5 overall, 6-5 MIAC), scoring 17 points and adding five assists.
Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North HS) recorded a career-high eight assists and added five points, while
Andy Seidlitz (FY, New Hope, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.
St. Mary's was led by the duo of Chris Palmer and Will Wright. Palmer finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Wright recorded 18 points and six rebounds.
The Cardinals shot an impressing 7-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first-half and took a 41-31 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The two teams traded baskets for the opening minutes of the second-half before Augsburg was able to put together a 12-2 run to pull within one at 56-55. Augsburg was able to regain the lead on a Polta layup and extended its lead to five with just under a minute to play. The Cardinals scored on their next to possessions putting the score at 64-62 with 23 seconds left. Augsburg and St. Mary's exchanged layups and free throws with Polta's made free throw putting Augsburg up 68-65 with four seconds left in the action. St. Mary's had a great three-point attempt with one second left, but it didn't fall and Augsburg hung on for the come-from-behind win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field, while St. Mary's connected on 39.7 percent (23-of-58) of its shots. The Auggies outrebounded the Cardinals 37-34 and outscored St. Mary's by a 46-26 margin in points in the paint.
Augsburg is off this weekend and will return to action on Wednesday (1/26) when it travels to St. Paul to take on the University of St. Thomas in a key MIAC matchup.
