MINNEAPOLIS - The Augsburg College women's basketball team used balanced attack to earn a 64-61 win over rival St. Catherine University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (4-12 overall, 3-10 MIAC) finished with four players in double figures and nearly collected a season-high in steals with 15 on the afternoon.
Brittany Dyshaw (SO, Eagan, Minn.) led the Auggies in scoring with 12 points and added seven rebounds and a game-high four steals.
Lexi Thompson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and
Serenae Levine (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) each finished with 10 points for Augsburg. Thompson also collected a team-high eight rebounds and tied a season-high with five assists, while adding two steals. Levine matched Thompson's five assists and added six rebounds.
Brittany Zins (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) posted her third consecutive double-digit game for the Auggies, finishing with 11 points and three rebounds.
St. Catherine (4-11 overall, 3-9 MIAC) was led by Laura Kalbfell and Sonja Ellingson. Kalbfell led all players with a game-high 16 points and added seven rebounds and two blocks, while Ellingson finished with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Augsburg scored baskets on its first four possessions of the game, taking an 8-2 lead in the opening minutes of action. St. Kate's slowly chipped away at the Augsburg lead until the 8:53 mark when they were finally able to tie things up at 18-18. The Wilcats put together a 14-4 run to take an eight point advantage but Augsburg scored the final five points of the first half to put the score at 32-29 in favor of St. Kate's.
The second half proved to be a back-and-forth affair with five tied scores and five lead changes. The score was tied 61-61 with 1:26 remaining. Augsburg was able to to score the final three points of the game, assisted by three key offensive boards in the final 40 seconds to claim the 64-61 victory over the Wildcats.
For the game, Augsburg shot 32.4 percent (22-of-68) from the floor, while St. Kate's connected on 37.1 percent (23-of-62) of its shots. The Auggies claimed a 48-41 advantage on the boards and forced 23 Wildcat turnovers.
Augsburg and St. Catherine both return to action on Wednesday (1/26) with Augsburg hosting St. Thomas and St. Kate's hosting Macalester.
