MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite double-doubles from
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) and
Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn.), the Augsburg College men's basketball team fell to Hamline University 74-66 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (12-7 overall, 7-7 MIAC) was led by the duo of Grzesiak-Grimm and Polta, who each finished with point-rebound double-doubles. Grzesiak-Grimm finished the night with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Polta recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds. Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was
Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS), who scored 11 points and recorded three assists.
Hamline (10-8 overall, 8-5 MIAC) was led by Mike Campbell and Carl Hipp. Hipp finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Campbell scored a game-high 20 points and added nine rebounds. Hipp's performance tonight pushes career point total to 1,421 and moves him past Basketball Hall of Famer Vern Mikkelsen into sixth on the Pipers' all-time points list.
In a game with nine ties and 13 lead changes, Hamline took a 36-33 lead into the locker room at the intermission. Both teams continued to trade baskets in the second half and were tied 60-60 with six minutes to play. Hamline used an 8-0 run over a 3:07 span to go up by nine, and Augsburg wasn't able to convert down the stretch.
For the game, Augsburg outshot Hamline 42.6 percent (26-of-61) to 40.3 percent (25-of-62). The teams finished with an identical 40 rebounds, but the difference in the game came down to free throws and points off turnovers. Hamline finished 19-of-26 from the charity stripe, while Augsburg was only able to convert on 11-of-19 and the Pipers were able to outscore the Auggies 16-2 in points off turnovers.
Augsburg and Hamline both return to action on Wednesday (2/2) with Augsburg traveling to Northfield to take on St. Olaf College and Hamline hosting Gustavus Adolphus College in key MIAC matchups.
