Cory Polta (JR, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) posted his third double-double of the season, leading the Augsburg College men's basketball team in a 80-74 loss to Concordia College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Polta recorded 20 points, and 10 rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor, while adding a career-high three assists for Augsburg (7-4 overall, 2-4 MIAC). Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies were
Matthew Quammen (SR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS), with 18 points and
Brett Sorenson (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (JR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) with 12 points apiece.
Concordia (7-4 overall, 3-3 MIAC) was led by John Fraase, who also finished with a double-double, collecting 25 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and an 8-for-10 performance from the free throw line.
The first 10 minutes of action featured short runs by both teams and a 12-12 tie at the 10:48 mark. Concordia was able to string together a 16-3 run over a 5:07 span to give the Cobbers a 32-20 lead with just under 4 minutes to play. Augsburg cut the lead to six but a free throw and layup for Concordia in the final 30 seconds put the score at 35-26 a the intermission.
Augsburg came out on a 10-2 run to start the second half, cutting the Cobber lead to 37-36. Concordia was able to extend its lead to double digits before Augsburg rallied again, cutting the Cobber lead to 78-74 with 15 seconds left to play. A pair of free throws with two seconds left sealed the win for Concordia.
For the game, Augsburg shot 40.0 percent (26-of-65), while Concordia connected on 50.0 percent (25-of-50) of its shots. Concordia held a 39-32 advantage on the boards, but Augsburg won the turnover battle forcing 11 while only committing seven.
Augsburg and Concordia both return to action on Saturday (1/8) with Augsburg traveling to Arden Hills to take on Bethel University, while Concordia plays host to St. John's University.
